AmeriKick Character Development

AmeriKick character development is imperative to the growth and well being of a successful martial artist.  One of our goals at AmeriKick is to produce well-rounded individuals who will succeed not only at our karate schools but as inspirational members in the community.



Students are expected to demonstrate a progression in character throughout their martial arts training.  Character stripes are awarded as a result of positive action taken at home, in school and in the community.  Students must meet the character development stripe requirement at each level before progressing to their next belt level. 


Character Development Breakdown

The following is a breakdown of monthly and weekly character development actions.  Also included are sample presentations, drills and explanations that serve as significant guides in teaching the character themes.  


Confidence: The ability to believe in oneself.

  • Confidence in the way you perform
  • Confidence in the way you speak
  • Confidence in intellect
  • Confidence in action


Instructor note: Depression is a disorder that affects in excess of 70% of people in some way, shape or form.  Research has demonstrated that learned helplessness (the belief that ones efforts are futile) is the leading pre-cursor to depression.  Teaching our students the importance of confidence/ self worth will have a direct influence on their performance in the areas of school, home, athletics, martial arts and socialization.


Leadership: The ability of an individual to influence and motivate others in a positive way.

  • Leaders do more than go along with the crowd
  • Being a positive role model
  • Leaders learn from mistakes
  • Leaders strive for excellence
  • Charisma; Leaders possess the motivational factors to become positive influences on those around them.

Goals: Personal achievements that one sets out to accomplish.

  • Goal Setting and Goal Getting
  • Specific, written down goals
  • Persistence in Achieving
  • Enthusiasm in achieving





Modesty: Ability to maintain a respectful mindset with regards to ones own ability and talents.

  • Difference between showing and telling
  • “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
  • “When we fail to listen, we fail to learn.”
  • “When we feel that we have all of the answers, we have failed.”


Courtesy:  It is something done not for the rewards, but for the good of it.  It is the ability to demonstrate respect towards others.

  • Courtesy is action
  • Use of power vocabulary: Please, Thank you, Sir, Mr. and Mrs.
  • Following rules
  • Demonstrating an appreciation for what others do.


Sample explanation: Courtesy is the ability to demonstrate respect through behavior, speech and action.  For example, instead of using the phrase “Yeah,” you might use Yes Mrs. Smith.”  Just as we build our skills in the martial arts, we must build our ability to demonstrate courtesy.


Integrity: is the basing of one's actions on an internally consistent framework of principles. Depth of principles and adherence of each level to the next are key determining factors. One is said to have integrity to the extent that everything he does and believes is based on the same core set of values.

  • Staying true to your beliefs


Self-Control: is perceived in a few ways. One of which is the exertion of one's own will on their personal self - their behaviors, actions, thought processes. Much of this comes from the perception of self and the ability to set up boundaries for that self. Self-control can be expanded into several different areas, ranging from respect to willpower. Self-control is therefore centered in the ability of a person to exert their will over the inhibitions of their body or self.

Perseverance: Perseverance is a steady persistence in a belief, purpose or action. It's a union of mind and body to overcome.  Succeeding against all odds. 

  • Fall down seven times, stand up eight. – Japanese Proverb
  • Consistency in training, learning and performing
  • The difference between “given” and “earned”
  • Champion mentality: “Don’t stop until you achieve your goal.”


Sample explanation:  It implies praiseworthy patience as opposed to stubbornness. As in the tortoise and the hare, slow and steady wins the race. Remember do not become distracted by other things.  Keep your goals in sight.


Indomitable Spirit: Don't be afraid to take a big step if one is indicated; the mindset that a person will do “whatever it takes” to succeed.

  • “Attitude determines your altitude.”
  • Your best: The ability of a student to perform to the degree that he/she could not possibly do any better.
  • “When you are tired is when it counts.”
  • Winners vs. Quitters


Sample explanation: “There is in this world no such force as the force of man determined to rise. 

The human soul cannot be chained,"- according to W.E.B DuBois 

"It is the power to push yourself even when the sweat is pouring and you are breathing heavily.  It is the ability to keep punching and kicking when the rest of the class has taken a break.  A sign of a great martial artist is the ability to perform even when they are tired.”


Self Discipline: A complete control over ones own actions, thoughts, feelings and behavior.

  • Discipline of actions.
  • Discipline in getting things done the right way
  • “It’s not what you do; it’s how you do it.”
  • Self Defense vs. Self Offense



Respect: Treating others the way you would like to be treated.

  • Bowing is a sign of respect, demonstrated each and every class.  It is a promise to give your best effort and to use the martial arts in a positive way.
  • Self-respect: “If you are not giving your best effort, you are showing disrespect.”
  • Respecting others and their needs
  • Respect of Parents, Teachers and Elders


Sample explanation: “Respect is having an appreciation for other’s feelings, ideas, goals and aspirations.  It is important to demonstrate respect at all times.  By giving your best practice, efforts, focus and control you demonstrate respect for the martial arts.”




Organization: The ability to keep ones tasks, priorities and goals in order

  • Keeping a day planner
  • Writing down what you learn
  • “Inch by inch is a cinch, yard by yard is hard, and mile by mile is a trial.”
  • Priorities in school, at home and in athletics.


Self Improvement: “CANI” (Constant And Never ending Improvement) philosophy

  • 10% rule: The most successful people in the world improve themselves 10% every day.
  • “Motion Creates Emotion.” – Anthony Robbins
  • “A journey of 1000 mile begins with the first step.”
  • “Improvement occurs in the consistency of positive action.”


Sample Explanation: “Improvement happens when you demonstrate perfect practice time and time again.  The most successful people in the world perform even the smallest tasks to the best of their ability day in and day out.”
